New Jersey Flute Intensive
Come learn from me, Yoon Huh, and Stephanie Kertesz, plus Guest Artist MARON KHOURY!!
Hi my lovely friends. You know I love teaching you flute tips and tricks online, but how would you like to work together IRL? I want to give you the most incredible opportunity to spend two days focusing on flute technique and learning from 4 master teachers and performers: our incredible guest artist Maron Khoury of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, my colleagues Yoon Huh and Stephanie Kertesz, and well, myself. The dates are June 26 & 27th, location— a church in Montclair, NJ. It has been my dream for years now to start my own flute intensive so that I could recreate some of the experiences that formed me as a young flutist.
You have until April 1st to apply for the early deadline, which will also give you a $25 discount. The image below should be clickable, but if not, here is the link to the registration form
Here is what our schedule will look like:
Thursday, June 26
10-10:45 'Warm Up Your Technique' Class with Sarah Carrier
11-12: Mastery class with Stephanie Kertesz: "Orchestral Excerpts"
12-1: Lunch break
1-2: Mastery class with Yoon Jung Huh: "How to Practice"
2-4: Chamber Music Reading Session
Friday, June 27
10-10:45 'Warm Up Your Technique' Class with Stephanie Kertsz and Yoon Jung Huh
11-12: Mastery class with Sarah Carrier: “Interpretation and Movement”
12-1: Lunch break
1-3: Mastery class with Maron Khoury
3-4: Recital with Instructors and select Participants
We currently have this set up as a day camp, but if you travel from out-of-state for this, I will come up with some after-hours musical activities for us (such as attending a concert), should you be interested.
About Maron Khoury
If you follow me on TikTok, you probably follow Maron Khoury too! He is the flutist who posts the most incredible technical feats. His handle is @maronkhoury_flutist
We are very excited to have him join us!
Below is his artist’s bio:
At age 20, virtuoso flutist Maron Anis Khoury became the youngest musician to join the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Born in the village of Tarshiha, Galilee, to a musical family, Khoury started playing the flute at the age of 11. Three years later, he was admitted to the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia to study with renowned flutist Jeffrey Khaner.
Prior to his enrollment at Curtis, Khoury studied with Eyal Ein-Habar and Uri Shoham (Israel Philharmonic), Sara Andon (Idyllwild Arts Academy), and David Shostak (Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra.)
Khoury is a recipient of several grants from the Curtis Institute of Music and the Charles M. Kanev Memorial Fellowship. In addition, he is a winner of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation Scholarship and the Schoen Fellowship Grant in honor of Charlotte White. He performed under many notable conductors including James Levine, Riccardo Muti, Simon Rattle, Christoph Eschenbach and Daniel Barenboim.
FAQ
Below are answers to some questions you might have. If you have any other questions or need clarification, feel free to comment to this post or send an email to: njfluteintensive@gmail.com
Is this camp for me?
You can see on the flyer that this camp is intended for a pretty wide range including high school, incoming college students (so basically graduating high school seniors) and adult enthusiasts. However, if you are an advanced middle school student OR a current college student, we think you can still benefit from this intensive and welcome you to apply. The only category this might not work for is a beginner, because you’ll find it difficult to participate in the warm ups and mastery classes.
What is a Mastery Class?
A Mastery Class is like a modern spin on a traditional master class. You will still have a chance to perform and to hear others perform, but the feel of the class will be more interactive and hold the understanding that we are ALL in a life-long process of working towards mastery. You can learn from each other just as much as you learn from the instructor. Each of our mastery classes will also be themed, so not only will you learn by hearing new repertoire and teacher feedback, but you will also learn more about orchestral excerpts, practice techniques, and interpretation & movement.
Can I perform for Maron Khoury?
We will likely only have time for 3 or 4 performers for Maron Khoury’s master class. If you would like to be considered to perform for his class (everyone will be able to observe), you’ll need to send us a recording via the registration form.
What will I get out of attending the flute intensive?
Many new techniques! Performance opportunities! A chamber music reading session! More specifically, you will learn new warm ups, practice techniques, orchestral audition tips, insight on musical expression and breathing, and of course the wise words of Maron Khoury.
Can my parents attend?
If you are under 18, you are welcome to have a parent or guardian attend. Please indicate this on the registration form.
Who will perform in the recital?
This will be a faculty recital with the possibility of performances by participants, depending on interest and readiness. More on this later!
Will lunch be included?
Yes! Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.
